Dear Friend,

Do you own a Shih Tzu?
Are you thinking of getting a Shih Tzu?
If you said yes to either of these questions then this message is for you.

You see, this is not some “generic” dog training information. This is written ONLY for Shih Tzu owners.

You’ll learn things most dog trainers don’t even know.

Here’s why.

I bought my first Shih Tzu from a wonderful woman named Kay.

She practically introduced the breed to this region of the country, and is responsible directly, or indirectly, for most of the Shih Tzu in the bordering states..

She absolutely adores these dogs. She often said to me, “You need to understand. These are not just dogs”.

And, she was right. I began to understand when I started breeding them myself.

Kay convinced me that a Shih Tzu was THE dog to get. And that breeding them
might be a way for me make some extra money.

Kay gave me LooLoo to get me started.

Hi Marie,
Just wanted to drop you a line to say thanks. “Megan” is now 5 months old, and thanks to the tips you gave me she’s been an absolute joy. My friends and family just love her.

PS. You’re right. That “secret weapon” is a life saver.

LooLoo was about 7 at the time, and had proven to be an excellent little mother.

Out of her second litter I picked out “CiCi” to keep for myself and gave LooLoo back to Kay where she could retire in the familiar
surroundings of the home where she’d been raised.

Kay  took me under her wing and taught me everything she knew about raising and training Shih Tzu.

Along the way Kay introduced me to her trainer and groomer.

I had stumbled onto my own personal group of professionals who were willing to
teach me everything they new!

They were there for me almost 24/7. Answering my questions; giving me tips;
Teaching me EVERYTHING they knew about Shih Tzu.

I don’t know if was just “dumb luck”, or divine intervention, but CiCi turned out to be a very special dog. She is much more than a pet .
She is my friend.

It was with the help of CiCi, and Kay  that I learned what amazing dogs Shih Tzu truly are.

Here’s some of what I discovered:

Shih Tzu are very intelligent dogs:

CiCi is the only dog I’ve ever seen that learns by watching, as opposed to being taught everything. For instance; I often took CiCi with me when I went to visit my mother. My mothers’ little terrier would sit up and beg whenever he wanted a treat.
One day I was standing in the kitchen when, “completely out of the blue” CiCi sat up and started waving her paws at me!
I gave her a treat and she trotted off to the dining room to enjoy her reward.

This kind of intelligence can be very positive, but it has its drawbacks as well.

An intelligent dog can be easier to train, but it can also make the dog very “headstrong”.

Shih Tzu can be manipulative and stubborn so
you need to start their training immediately.

Be consistent in their discipline and let them know you mean what you say.

From CiC’s second litter we kept Millie. Ci Ci was so easily trained I was caught a little off guard by Millie.
Millie was a more “typical” Shih Tzu. Many Shih Tzu can be difficult, and that was Millie. She was timid, and stubborn which
made her tough to train.

Millie would;

  • · Bark at every little noise she heard,
  • · Go crazy whenever somebody came to door and jump all over them.
I know she thought she was just being friendly, but it was very annoying!
  • · Chew on my fingers
  • · Chew on the furniture.
  • · And (yuck!) she was eating poop!

But, by using some of the tricks, and techniques Kay and Shirley taught me,
and from having raised three litters of pups myself I was able to break Millie of all of these bad habits.

And CiCi helped as well by ruling over Millie in an almost human motherly way. She would scold her when she did something wrong, and lead her outside when it was time to take care of “business”

Hi Marie!
Thanks for keeping in contact. I have never loved a four-legged human-being
before, but I do now! I truly believe he's more human than a lot of people I know!

He is a wonderful addition to our family. I have used sooooo much of your
information, and I am happy to report that it works! Sadly, I was a sap
when it came to putting him in his kennel. After his long journey to our
home - 8 hours - he didn't find comfort in it any longer, and I couldn't
handle his crying. I've spoiled him and therefore, I am dealing with the
very long journey of potty training. He's doing really well first thing in
the morning and late at night.... it's the middle part we're struggling
with. If we ever get a sibling for our "Gizmo," I will DEFINITELY do as you
suggest for potty training. Everything else you've talked about is working
great for us.
Your years of experience are helping this "first-timer" with the "goes" and
"woes."

Thanks, Marie!

A Shih-Tzu's very happy mama,
Jenny

Well, then came Jake. Our little male. We came to call him “Crazy” Jake.
Full of “spit and vinegar” Jake was a handful. Energetic, and curious to a fault it took everything I knew, and some help from Kay to get him under control. He was about 6 months old when we got him, and had had very little training.
Now he is my husbands best friend, following him everywhere he goes, obeying his every command.

With the help of Kay and 10 years of personal experience I’ve solved just about every problem a Shih Tzu owner can have.

Now I want to help you have the best Shih Tzu possible.

Unlike other dogs, Shih Tzu come with their own set of requirements for care.

“Your Shih Tzu And You” will help you save hundreds of dollars in healthcare expenses by caring for your Shih Tzu properly.

And being alert to particular health tendencies of Shih Tzu.

  • Proper feeding,
  • grooming,
  • exercise,
  • dental care
  • eye/ear care

will ensure that your Shih Tzu has long, happy, healthy life.

Here’s just some of  what you’ll learn from “Your Shih Tzu And You”

  • What to look for when picking out your new puppy.
All puppies are cute, but not all puppies are equal. Learn
the physical features to look for and how to recognize behavior and temperament tendencies to help you find the perfect pup.

  • The secrets of housebreaking your Shih Tzu.
What works with other dogs will not work with Shih Tzu.

In fact, conventional techniques can backfire and make
your Shih Tzu rebel and be even more difficult to train!

Shih Tzu mature slower than other dogs.
So, it requires more patience and different techniques than with other breeds.

  • What you should never do while housebreaking your Shih Tzu.

Proven techniques that work for even the most difficult dogs.

  • Your “Secret Weapon” for housebreaking.
(What a life saver” for me! I can’t imagine being without it.)

  • Discover the best diet to ensure your Shih Tzus’ health.
Proper diet is essential for the health of any dog.
And Shih Tzu have their own particular requirements.

Never feed your Shih Tzu these common foods that can harm or
    even kill a Shih Tzu.

Even certain dog foods can be bad for a Shih Tzu.

  • Grooming Your Shih Tzu.

The Shih Tzu coat is unlike that of any other dog and requires
special care to make sure it stays healthy.

An unhealthy coat can lead to skin problems as well.

  • The #1 thing you must avoid to ensure your Shih Tzu has a healthy coat and skin

  • Should you groom him yourself, or hire a professional?

If you choose to groom him yourself it will take a lot of practice
and the proper tools to get the techniques right.

On the other hand professional groomers can be expensive.
If you choose to do the grooming yourself I take you through it
    step-by-step.

I even include a simple recipe for shampoo you can make at home.

    Proper dental care.

Although proper dental care is important for all dogs, poor dental health in Shih Tzu can lead to other non-dental problems.

8 things you need to watch for to insure eye and ear health.

The eyes and (especially) the ears of a Shih Tzu are different than other
    dogs and need special attention.

Shih Tzu are prone to ear infections. Learn how to avoid them, and treat them.

  • Tear stains - Those stains that develop around the eyes and ears, and mouth.
How to keep them to a minimum, and remove them

  • How to choose the right vet.
Not all vets are the same.

3 things NEVER to consider when selecting your vet.

  • Also, consider Allopathic vs. Holistic medicine.
Which is best for your dog?

  • The pros and cons of professional Shih Tzu obedience training.

  • Should you breed your Shih Tzu?

Although it can be a very rewarding experience, not every dog owner is
    cut out for it.
I’ve devoted an entire chapter to help you decide if it’s right for you

Special Announcement! I’ve just added two new bonus chapters!
  • Tips For Dealing With Dog Emergencies.
  • 4 Things Frustrated Dog Owners Should Know.

Hi Marie,
I found your book very helpful and informative. My little Brewster is finally the dog I’ve always wanted thanks to you. You really know your dogs!

Anne Ballard,

I know there are still a lot of questions out there!

But, don’t worry I’ve tried to answer all your questions.

How are they when left alone?

How do I get her to stop barking?

Belle is so picky when it comes to food. How do I get her to eat?

  • There are so many places to register my Shih Tzu. AKC,
CKC, etc. Which should I use?

  • A friend of mine lost her Shih Tzu due to kidney problems.
    Is this common?

  • Are Shih Tzu good with children? I have a 7 year old.

  • Why does my Shih Tzu “snort” and choke after drinking water?
    How I can stop it?

  • I would like to breed my Shih Tzu. How do I know if I
    should?

  • How do I make her stop eating poop?

Hello Marie,
